Communication through the Ages

For thousands of years, people have communicated in many ways. Early humans used gestures, drawings and sounds to share their ideas. About 5000 years ago, the Sumerians invented writing, so messages could travel from one place to another. In the 15th century, Gutenberg built the printing press, and books became cheaper. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, which allowed people to talk over long distances. Today, the Internet is the fastest way to communicate. Millions of people send emails, chat on social networks and make video calls every day. However, some experts say that young people spend too much time online and speak less with their families. They advise teenagers to use technology wisely and to keep real conversations alive.

Part Three: Written Expression (6 pts)

Marking criteria:

  • Relevance and completeness: all three points are covered (means and frequency, advantage and disadvantage, advice) – 2 pts
  • Correct grammar and tenses (present simple, modals, connectors) – 2 pts
  • Organisation and coherence (opening sentence, linking words such as however, because, so, concluding sentence) and appropriate length – 1 pt
  • Vocabulary, spelling and punctuation – 1 pt

Model answer:

I communicate with my friends and family in different ways. Every day, I send messages to my classmates on my phone, and I often make video calls to my cousins who live in France. On Fridays, I usually visit my grandparents and talk to them face to face. Modern communication is fast and cheap, so we can share news in a few seconds. However, some teenagers spend too much time on their phones and forget to talk to the people around them. My advice to my classmates is to use technology wisely and to spend more time with their families.
