The Rock Art of Tassili n'Ajjer

Tassili n'Ajjer is a vast plateau in south-eastern Algeria, near the town of Djanet. Thousands of years ago, the Sahara was not a desert. It was green, with rivers, lakes and wild animals such as giraffes, elephants and crocodiles. People lived in this region. They hunted animals, kept cattle and gathered wild fruits. They did not write, but they painted and engraved scenes of their daily life on the rocks.

In 1933, a French officer, Lieutenant Brenans, discovered some of these paintings by chance. Later, in 1956, the explorer Henri Lhote led a team that copied hundreds of them. UNESCO added Tassili n'Ajjer to the World Heritage List in 1982 because it holds one of the most important groups of prehistoric art in the world. Sadly, some paintings disappeared because tourists touched them and because of sand and wind.

The Roman people built a theatre, a library, public baths and wide streets, so the city became rich and beautiful. Many people lived there and enjoyed a comfortable life. In 1982, UNESCO added Timgad to the World Heritage List because it is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in North Africa.
