A Day at Timgad

Last spring, our class from Batna visited the Roman city of Timgad. Our teacher, Mrs Amina, told us that Emperor Trajan founded the city around 100 AD as a home for retired soldiers. At first, about 15 000 people lived there. The city was built on a regular plan: the streets crossed each other at right angles, which made it easy to walk around.

While we were walking along the main street, our guide showed us Trajan's Arch. It is the most famous monument of the site. Nearby, we saw the library and the theatre, which could hold about 3 500 spectators. Although the city was abandoned many centuries ago, a lot of its buildings are still standing today because the dry climate and the sand protected them. In 1982, UNESCO added Timgad to its World Heritage list.

Karim, who used to think that history was boring, took photos all day. Now he dreams of becoming an archaeologist.

Model answer (Topic 1)

Last summer, I visited Djemila with my family. We went there by car on a sunny Friday morning. The ruins were wonderful. We saw the old market, the theatre and a beautiful arch. While we were walking near the temple, my little brother found a small piece of old pottery, so the guide explained to us how Romans used it. Although it was very hot, we stayed there for three hours because everything was so interesting. However, I was a little sad when we left. I really want to go back and learn more about our heritage.

(about 95 words)

Model answer (Topic 2)

My grandfather used to live in a small village near Tlemcen when he was young. Every morning, he used to walk three kilometres to school because there was no bus. After school, he used to help his father in the fields. Life was different from mine: there was no television and he didn't use to have a phone. However, he was happy because he played with his friends every evening. I like listening to his stories because they teach me about our traditions and make me proud of my family.

(about 90 words)

(Any other relevant and well-written paragraph is accepted. Deduct 0,5 pt if the length is clearly below 60 words.)
