My Grandfather's Notebook
My grandfather, Hocine, was born in 1950 in a small village near Tizi Ouzou. When he was a boy, he used to wake up at five o'clock every morning to take the goats to the hills. There was no electricity in the village, so in the evenings the family used to sit around an oil lamp and listen to his grandmother's stories. He walked six kilometres to school every day and he never missed a lesson. One winter morning, while he was crossing a river, he lost his only notebook in the water. He was very sad, but his teacher, Mr Amrane, gave him a new one and said, "Knowledge is the best treasure." Hocine studied hard and became an engineer in 1975. He built many bridges in the region. Today he is retired, but he still tells his grandchildren the same stories. He says, "Life was hard, but it was beautiful, too."

Part Three: Written Expression (6 pts)
Model answer:
My grandmother, Fatima, was born in 1955 in a village near Tlemcen. When she was young, she used to get up early and help her mother bake bread. She also used to walk to the fountain to fetch water every day. One afternoon, while she was coming back home, she found a small kitten on the road. First, she took it home. Then she gave it some milk and, after that, her mother let her keep it. Finally, the kitten became the family's pet for ten years. Later, my grandmother became a primary school teacher because she loved children. Today she is retired, but she still tells us beautiful stories every weekend.
