Timgad: A City under the Sand

Timgad, in the Aurès region of eastern Algeria, was founded by the Roman Emperor Trajan around 100 AD. He built it to house retired soldiers and to protect the borders of the empire. The Romans had planned the city carefully before they started building, so its streets crossed each other at right angles like a chessboard. Inside the city, citizens used to meet in the forum, read in the library and watch plays in a theatre that held about 3500 spectators.

After the Roman Empire declined, Timgad was attacked and then abandoned. For centuries the wind covered its stones with sand, so the city was almost forgotten. It was rediscovered by a Scottish traveller in the 18th century, and serious excavations began in 1881. Today, Timgad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and thousands of tourists visit it every year because it shows how ancient people lived.

Model answer (about 90 words)

Last week, two men were arrested at the airport in Batna because they had stolen ancient coins from the museum at night. They wanted to sell them abroad and become rich quickly. However, the police had been informed in time, so they caught the thieves before the plane took off. Although the coins could have brought them a lot of money, the men will probably go to prison and pay a heavy fine. This proves that ill-gotten gains never prosper. Moreover, our heritage belongs to all Algerians, so we must protect it.

Marking criteria (6 points)

  • Relevance and content (2 points): the paragraph tells the news (the theft, the arrest, the punishment) (1) and explains the proverb or the value of heritage (1). Deduct 0.5 if the length is far below 80 words.
  • Language: tenses, passive voice and linkers (2 points): correct past simple and past perfect (0.75), at least one correct passive sentence (0.5), at least two correct linking words (0.75).
  • Organization and coherence (1 point): a logical order with an introduction, development and conclusion (0.5), and ideas that are well connected (0.5).
  • Spelling and punctuation (1 point): 1 point for at most 2 mistakes, 0.5 for 3 to 5 mistakes, 0 for more.
